OVERVIEW- Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh boasts of pre-historic rock shelters and some of the finest prehistoric cave paintings in South Asia. Located 45 km south of Bhopal, on the southern edge of the Vindhyachal hills, Bhimbetka was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Archaeologists are of the opinion that the caves might have been occupied over 10,000 years ago. The site has more than 700 rock shelters. The caves evolved over time into rock-shelters, ideal sites for aboriginal settlements and abundant natural resources like perennial water supplies, natural shelter, rich forest flora and fauna were conducive to the development of sustainable societies and creation of notable rock art. The smooth rocks have led some scientists to believe that the area was once under water.

NAGPUR- It is regarded as the second capital of Maharashtra. It is also called the orange-growing capital of India, since it is the largest Orange producer in India. Nagpur is named after the river Nag, on the banks of which the city is situated.

BHIMBETKA- The Bhimbetka caves were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2003. Bhimbetka caves exhibit the ancient art and rock-cut architecture of our country. It is one of the perfect places for art admirers. Out of the 760 rock shelters found here, 500 are adorned with paintings. The cave paintings here date back to 3,000yrs.

Today drive to Bhimbetka. Transfer to hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure or you can go for a leisure walk around the place.

RAJAT PRAPAT- Declared a World Heritage Site in 2003, the Bhimbetka rock shelters is an archaeological site of the Palaeolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age. According to Hindu Mythology, the name of the cave is associated with Bhima, one of the Pandavas of Mahabharata. Further, it is believed that Bhimbetka cave was the place where Bhima and his brothers rested after being exiled from the kingdom.

The cave is home to a huge impressive collection of paintings and ancient artifacts. The intricate paintings on the walls familiarize you with the concept of ancient art and modern art, which are beyond comparison. One can see paintings of seven different eras. The paintings found here bear a close resemblance to the ones discovered in Kakadu National Park in Australia, to the cave paintings of Bushmen in Kalahari Desert and Upper Palaeolithic Lascaux cave paintings in France.

Day free for leisure and later, depart to Nagpur to catch your flight/train towards onward destination.
