Kaziranga National Park is one of the prides of India. This prestigious national park of India is situated in the north eastern part of the country in the district of Golaghat and Nagoan in the state of Assam. Let go back to the beginnings of the twentieth century in the year of 1904 when this beautiful wildlife sanctuary was created, and about 68 years later it was declared as National Park by the Government of Assam. 

It is noteworthy to mention that it is the host for two third of world population of endangered Indian one-horned rhinoceros and also declared as a tiger reserve in 2006, holding the highest density of tigers in the world. The park is also a domicile for large breeding inhabitants of Elephants, wild water buffaloes and Swamp Deer. It has been declared as a forest reserve in the year of 1908 and wildlife sanctuary in the year of 1950. Covering an approximate area of 430 square kilometers, Kaziranga was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique natural environment in the year of 1985. Apart from this, the park has been identified as an important bird area by Bird-life International Society as it is a home to various species of migrating and inhabitant birds. Situated on the banks of river Brahmaputra, the sanctuary is blessed with the four different kinds of vegetation. The Tropical moist mixed deciduous forests and tropical semi-evergreen forests is marked by the 41% of the tall grasses, 29% open jungle, 11% short grasses and rest is covered with the rivers and the water bodies. Its breathtaking array of flora and diverse fauna adds value to the scenic beauty of the park.

Activities to do in Kaziranga National Park- There is no improved mode to observe the forest flora and fauna than by taking an elephant safari. Wildlife In Kaziranga National Park- In the Kaziranga Forest, four types of flora exist primarily which enrich the vegetation and make the perfect natural habitat for the plenty of herbivorous living here. As the altitude of the eastern and western territory of the park has some differences, the vegetation of eastern belt is entirely different than the western belt of the park. The western side, being on the lower side, dominated by the grassland with the tall grass like elephant grass found on the higher side while short grass captured the lower side around the plenty of water bodies created by the flood. The main plants that found richly in the park are alluvial inundated grasslands, alluvial savanna woodlands, tropical moist mixed deciduous forests, and tropical semi-evergreen forests. Also, many trees like Indian gooseberry, big cotton tree, and the elephant Apple are found in abundance along with a range of aquatic flora seen in various ponds, lakes, and riverbanks. 

Highly famed for having the largest population of the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros, the Kaziranga Forest is home to many other big and small wild animals as well as numerous species of exotic birds, reptiles, and aquatic fauna. The wild animals found primarily in the park are Rhinoceros, Bengal Tiger, Elephant, Leopards, Sloth bear, Hoolock Gibbon, Golden Langur, Wild water buffalo, swamp deer, Gaur, Sambar, etc. Also, the endangered Ganges Dolphins are found in the rivers in Kaziranga.

Safari Entry Points- Kaziranga National Park forest department offers Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari for the wildlife lovers to explore the forest conveniently. The magnificent natural sumptuousness and wonderful wildlife of the Kaziranga draw huge tourist flow for the safari. The park offers two types of safari- one is Jeep Safari and other is elephant safari. The park that is sprawling in the area of around 430 sq km which is divided into the four tourism circuit for the better tourism management. All the tourism circuits have its own charm with the distinguished wildlife and landscape beauty. The four circuits and their entry point for the Jeep Safari are followings-

  2. Bagori in Western Range at Bagori
  3. Agaratoli in Eastern Range at Agaratoli
  4. Ghorakati in Burapahar Range at Ghorakhati

Jeep Safari Timing- 

  1. Morning Safari - 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM
  2. Afternoon Safari - 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

Elephant Safari Timing- Morning Safari - 05:30 AM to 07:30 AM

How to Reach Kaziranga National Park- Kaziranga National Park, located in Assam, can be accessed by all modes of transportation from different major cities of India. Tourists can choose their own preferred mode of available transportation by airways, railways or bus. These modes of transportation connect Kaziranga from all major cities in India. 

By Air: The nearest airport is in Jorhat town which is 97 kilometers away from the Kaziranga. Travelers can book flight to Kaziranga from Delhi, Mumbai, Gangtok and Kolkata. The other airport is positioned at Guwahati which at a distance of 217 kilometres from Kaziranga. You can choose to land at Guwahati and take a cab or mini bus to reach the national park. 

By Rail: Railway is the easy and inexpensive mode of transportation to Kaziranga. Kaziranga receives trains running from all major destinations in India. The nearest railways station to Kaziranga is Furkating (80 kms), Connected by trains form Guwahati. Gauahati is the nearest major railway station and well connected with rest of the Indian railway station. 

By Road: If you wish to travel to Kaziranga by bus then first you have to reach Guwahati or Jorhat by rail or air and board the bus or cab to Kaziranga National Park.
