About Kumarakom, the famous backwater tourist destination in Kerala is located about 12 kms from Kottayam. This place can be reached through a voyage from Alappuzha. Kumarakom is undoubtedly the most invigorating, fascinating paradise in Kerala, God's own country. This rich green, sleepy little village of Kumarkom is located on the Vembanad lake amidst mangrove forests and coconut groves. Kumarakom is an enchanting picnic spot and provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exhilarating. The slender coconut palms standing here, there and everywhere, its never ending paddy fields, meandering lagoons and backwaters, mangroves nesting birds of a hundred varieties can peacefully calm and invigorate your mind. On the scenic Vembanad lake you will come across plenty of traditional country crafts or houseboats, boats and canoes. The fresh water of the lake runs into the mainland making a labyrinth of lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways. The backwater houses a variety of species of both fauna and flora and marine life.

Kumarakom is also considered to be the gateway to the famous backwaters of Kuttanad. Kumarakom is also the home of various sprawling ethnic waterfront resorts. These resorts offer comfortable accommodation and exclusive leisure options like an Ayurvedic massage, yoga, meditation, boating, fishing and swimming. The adventurous could indulge in water sports such as windsailing and waterskiing. Kumarakom is also a center for houseboat cruises. 

Kumarakom enjoys a well balanced tropical climate. The temperature ranges between 16.10 degree Celsius to 37.80 degree Celsius. There is always a cool, fresh breeze, which makes even the warmest weather readily agreeable. The best time to visit Kumarakom is from November to March.

Tourist attractions in Kumarakom- The major tourist attraction in Kumarakom is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a world famous bird sanctuary. This sanctuary is an ornithologist paradise. Some migratory birds migrate during the winter from across the world including the Siberian stork. The other tourist attractions in Kumarakom are Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls, Pathiramanal, Erumely, Aranmula, Vagamon, Elaveezha Poonchira and Vaikom.

Altitude- Kumarakom is at an altitude of approximately 1600 metres(5249 ft) above mean sea level.

Weather- Pleasant during the rainy and winter season, but can get quite warm during the summer between March and May. But there is always a cool breeze in the region.

Best Time to Visit- Between the months of September and March that usually experience pleasant climate.

How to Get There?

By Air- The nearest Airport to Kumarakom is Cochin International Airport which at a distance of 85 kilometres. The Airport is well-connected to major cities across India and abroad. From the airport, you need to hire private cabs or taxis to reach Kumarakom.

By Train- Kottayam Railway Station is just 16 kilometres away from Kumarakom. From the station, you can easily get cabs or taxis to reach the place.

By Road- Plenty of Kerala state transport buses keep moving to Kumarakom from Kottayam. Kottayam bus station is well connected to all major cities around Kerala through KSRTC buses. Private air-conditioned buses are available to Kottayam from other major cities of South India such as Bangalore, Chennai and Mangalore.

Local Cuisines- The region mostly has Syrian-Christian style cuisine. You can find Appam-rice bread, tapioca, Karimeen-a very exotic fresh water fish, and other seafood such as shrimps, prawns, crabs and squids. Frog legs, donkey stew and crane fry are also available here.
