The andaman and Nicobar Islands make one of the seven union territories of India with Port Blair as its capital. It is a group of more than 570 islands located on the Bay of Bengal. Of these, only 38 are permanently inhabited. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are divided into two island groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, which are separated by the 10°N parallel. As indicated in the map, the Andaman Sea lies to the east of these islands and the Bay of Bengal to the west. The southernmost point of India, Indira Point, is located in the Great Nicobar Island. The archipelago comprises North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman in the Andaman group of islands. The Nicobar group of islands comprises Great Nicobar, Nancowry, Car Nicobar, Chowra and Katchal. This region experiences tropical climate and 92% of its area is forested. 

The Andaman and Nicobar region is home to the only known Paleolithic people living today who have little or no contact with the outside world. The highest point of Andaman islands is Saddle Peak which stands at 732 metres height and that of Nicobar is Mount Thullier (642 metres).These islands span an area of 8,249 square kilometers out of which, 8,211 square kilometres is rural. The major tribes inhabiting this place are the Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese, Nicobarese and Shompen tribes. The major religion of these indigenous inhabitants is animism. According to this religion, the sole deity responsible for everything that happens in the world is Paluga. 

The Andaman islands are located on the primordial trade route connecting India to Myanmar. These islands were first visited by the navy brigade of East India Company in 1789. In 1872, Andaman Islands were connected to the Nicobar Islands by the British for administrative purposes. These islands were occupied by the Japanese during the Second World War. Andaman and Nicobar Islands became the union territory of India in 1956.

Places to See in Andaman

Tourists come to this site to see the beauty of the rare corals and the exotic life of the marine animals in Andaman. Anthropological Museum- The Anthropological Museum houses the traces of the ethnicity of Andaman. Therefore, here we come across many artifacts, utensils, clothes, sculptures, etc. belonging to the different tribes of Andaman.

Indira Point of Nicobar is situated on the great Nicobar island of eastern Indian Ocean. It is one of the prime attractions of the Nicobar islands. Located in the middle of water, the light house is one of the most visited and beautifully maintained light houses of the world.

The sight of the gigantic lighthouse of Indira Point will mesmerize the visitors in complete wonder. The external stairway spiraling around the light house is painted in white and red bands. The devastating tsunami of 24th December 2004 affected the the whole Indian Territory a lot. It destroyed the whole power station but could not affect the lighthouse.

Car Nicobar- The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise of a cluster of islands that lies in the heart of the Bay of Bengal. Among the major tourist attractions of this Island, the Car Nicobar is a frequently visited one. The Car Nicobar is basically the headquarters of the Nicobar Island.

However, it is better to avoid the monsoons in order to keep yourself away from strong winds, tidal waves and incessant rains. The best time to visit the islands is between October and mid-May.
